FOSSILS/FÓSILES
These copper "fossils” pay homage to lives of times gone by and what now remains of them. They tell the story of living beings: how we all appear, then disappear, as well as referencing Mexico City's geological crisis.
Underneath where the city is now, there was once a vast underground lake, drained of drinking water first by the Aztecs and now by the rapidly growing population of the city. Where the underground lake was is now unstable clay.
For a thousand years, Mexico City has been sinking, and it continues to sink at a rate of 50 cm/20 inches per year. The city is rapidly running out of water and is increasingly prone to massive earthquakes — a situation that is not possible to reverse or resolve.
